George Russell set the tempo within the opening follow session for the Austrian Grand Prix, the Mercedes driver lower than one-tenth forward of Max Verstappen.

Russell, who gained final outing in Canada, posted a 1m 05.542s on Pirelli’s delicate tyre on the Purple Bull Ring, which left him 0.065s away from Purple Bull’s Verstappen after the one-hour session.

Championship chief Oscar Piastri was third, whereas F2 championship chief Alex Dunne completed the session fourth, lower than a tenth behind the lead McLaren, as he took the seat of Lando Norris throughout the session.
